Melissa Orkin is a researcher and educator who works to integrate evidence from the fields of cognitive neuroscience and psychology with practical strategies for building literacy skills. This workshop will introduce a research-based framework that supports teachers' ability to match reading instruction with students' needs. Drawing insights from the reading circuit, participants will be introduced to a series of assessment practices that identify areas of strength and weakness. Then lead through an interpretation framework and finally shown practical strategies for supporting skill-building in a specific area of need. Particular attention will be paid to the importance of phonological awareness, orthographic mapping, and addressing weaknesses in naming speed.
